MAKING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION A BIT MORE HUMAN FOR THE NHS

Case Study: The Princess Alexandra Hospital

The challenge
The Princess Alexandra Hospital was looking to begin its digital transformation through Alex Health. This whizzy new electronic health record planned to improve patient safety, quality of care and health outcomes.

But how could do they effectively manage this substantial roll out to colleagues whose engagement levels ranged from ‘enthusiastic’ to ‘resistant’. They needed to make sure everyone was on the same page, while being eager and able to embrace change. Tricky. That’s when they came to Be Human Collective.

What we did

While the ultimate goal was digital transformation, we focused on the human element that was driving it. Through diagnostic sessions with Navigators and Floorwalkers (the volunteer employees/ambassadors who would support the roll out), we gathered honest feedback. We found their excitement was mixed with anxiety, and a little apprehension. We took these findings and shaped live, interactive sessions.

The Human Touch Workshops aimed to empower these ambassadors to guide colleagues through Alex Health's digital transformation. Activities included interactive sessions, breakouts, and actor-led scenarios to develop emotional intelligence, understand others’ emotions, and adapt communication styles. Participants enjoyed re-writing scenarios with behavioural insights to solve challenges, making the learning both practical and engaging. And we’re happy to report that the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Anything else?
Oh yes… Those who missed the live event could access an online webinar which featured the key learnings and extra resources. All participants, in-person or virtual, received a toolkit to reinforce skills, leaving them confident for the Alex Health rollout.

Results
As of now, Alex Health has just launched, so concrete results aren't in yet. But in the meantime, here's what participants said about The Human Touch Workshops:

‘I learnt it’s very easy to tap into superpowers by being patient, reading room and utilising that space.’

‘Well done, and thank you. We really enjoyed all the actors.’

‘The most interesting thing I learnt at the workshop was how to be more understanding of people's feelings and pressures points, how to empower others, and how to stay positive.’

While designed specifically for the Princess Alexandra Hospital, we can create similar workshops for any business undergoing digital transformation, focusing on empathy to strengthen human connections.
